Hip-Hop & R&B Fans Lead Daily Music Immersion, Spending Nearly Four Hours with Tunes

Andre WashingtonAndre WashingtonAugust 20, 20254 Minutes read

New research from Edison Research’s Q2 2025 Share of Ear® study reveals a significant trend in audio consumption: fans who primarily listen to Hip-Hop and R&B music dedicate substantially more daily time to their favorite genres than any other group. These dedicated listeners spend an average of 3 hours and 48 minutes with music each day, a figure that significantly outpaces the general population’s average and highlights a deep, consistent engagement with these influential genres.

The Data: A Deep Dive into Genre Listening Habits

The comprehensive Share of Ear® study, a cornerstone for understanding American audio consumption, has for the first time broken down daily music listening time by genre preference. The findings from the second quarter of 2025 indicate that the average American aged 13 and older spends 2 hours and 50 minutes with music daily. However, the data shows a clear hierarchy of dedication.

Hip-Hop and R&B enthusiasts lead the pack by a considerable margin. Their daily immersion in music, totaling 3 hours and 48 minutes, is nearly an hour longer than the average listener. Following them, fans of Alternative Rock demonstrate the second-highest level of engagement, dedicating approximately 3 hours and 19 minutes to music each day. At the other end of the spectrum, listeners who most frequently opt for Oldies or Christian music genres spend the least amount of time with music on a daily basis.

Decoding the Devotion: Why Hip-Hop and R&B Resonate Most

Several factors likely contribute to the leading position of Hip-Hop and R&B in daily listening time. These genres, with their roots in cultural movements and consistent evolution, often possess a profound connection with their audience. Historically, Hip-Hop and R&B have been dominant forces in music streaming, consistently accounting for a significant portion of overall music consumption, with reports indicating they make up about 30.7% of all streams across major platforms. This deep engagement suggests that music is more than just background noise for these fans; it is an integral part of their lifestyle and identity.

The appeal often extends across demographics, particularly resonating with younger audiences who are generally more immersed in digital music platforms and streaming services. The culture surrounding Hip-Hop and R&B frequently emphasizes artistic expression, storytelling, and community, fostering a strong sense of loyalty and continuous interaction among fans. This creates a powerful cycle where listeners are not only consuming music but are deeply invested in the artists, culture, and narratives that these genres embody.

The Broader Audio Landscape: Context and Implications

These genre-specific listening habits are unfolding within a rapidly changing audio ecosystem. Edison Research’s studies, including Share of Ear®, have consistently tracked shifts in audio consumption. While AM/FM radio still holds a significant share of daily listening, particularly in vehicles, internet-delivered audio formats—including streaming music, podcasts, and video platforms like YouTube—collectively account for well over 50% of all listening time. This aligns with the observed higher engagement among Hip-Hop/R&B fans, who are often heavy users of digital platforms where music is readily accessible, curated, and constantly updated.

For advertisers, marketers, and music industry professionals, these insights are invaluable. They underscore the intense loyalty and deep engagement that certain genres can cultivate, offering a clear picture of audience commitment. This data can inform targeted marketing strategies, content creation, and platform development, helping stakeholders understand where to invest resources to reach the most dedicated listeners. The findings provide compelling stories about the power of music to shape daily routines and foster profound connections.

Other Genres in Focus and Future Trends

While Hip-Hop and R&B lead, Alternative Rock fans also demonstrate a significant commitment to music, spending over three hours daily. This segmentation of listening habits provides a nuanced view of the diverse ways audiences interact with sound. It also highlights that while genres like Oldies and Christian music may appeal to dedicated listeners, they do not command the same daily time investment.

The music industry in 2025 is also characterized by trends like genre-bending, the rise of AI in music creation, and the increasing importance of direct-to-fan engagement. As music becomes more personalized and context-dependent – with listeners often feeling like the “main character” in their own stories while listening – understanding how and why specific genres capture such extensive daily listening time becomes crucial. The deep immersion of Hip-Hop and R&B fans in their music reflects this broader trend of music serving as a constant, significant soundtrack to listeners’ lives.

Conclusion: A Testament to Musical Immersion

Edison Research’s Q2 2025 Share of Ear® data unequivocally positions Hip-Hop and R&B fans as the most dedicated music consumers. Their daily commitment of nearly four hours to their preferred genres far surpasses that of other music fans and the general population, solidifying Hip-Hop/R&B’s status as genres that foster unparalleled listener devotion. This finding is a testament to the genres’ enduring cultural impact, their ability to forge deep emotional connections, and their integration into the daily lives of their most ardent supporters. These statistics offer critical insights into modern music consumption, providing valuable stories for anyone seeking to understand the evolving relationship between listeners and their music.
