Veteran DJ Enuff Departs Hot 97 After 27 Years; Industry Buzzes Over Station Shake-Up and DJ Controversy

Kendra BanksKendra BanksAugust 28, 20253 Minutes read

NEW YORK, NY – August 29, 2025 – The landscape of New York City’s hip-hop radio was dramatically reshaped today as veteran radio personality and DJ Ephrem Louis Lopez Sr., widely known as DJ Enuff, hosted his final broadcast on the iconic Hot 97 after an impressive 27-year tenure. His unexpected departure marks the end of a significant era for the station, sending ripples of shock and discussion throughout the global hip-hop community.

DJ Enuff, a beloved figure recognized for his skill, charisma, and deep connection to the culture, signed off on Friday, August 29th, expressing his gratitude to listeners and the station for “27 unforgettable years.” His farewell message, shared across social media platforms, hinted at a new chapter in his career, stating, “This chapter may be closing, but the journey continues. Make sure you tap in with me for my next adventure.”

An Era Concludes at Hot 97

For nearly three decades, DJ Enuff, also known as “The Heavy Hitter,” has been a cornerstone of Hot 97’s programming. His journey with the station began in 1998, building on earlier experience at stations like 98.7 KISS FM, where he started in 1993, filling in for legendary DJ Red Alert. Over the years, Enuff commanded various time slots, from early mornings to late nights, becoming a consistent and trusted voice. His influence extended beyond the airwaves; he famously served as the road DJ for The Notorious B.I.G. during his career and founded the influential Heavy Hitters DJ Crew, fostering the next generation of talent.

His departure coincides with a broader, significant restructuring of Hot 97’s weekday lineup. The station announced a new schedule designed to enhance its programming, which notably includes an expanded five-hour block for fellow long-time DJ Funkmaster Flex, shifting his show to the 5 PM to 10 PM slot. This strategic realignment also sees Nessa Nitty taking over the afternoon drive from 1 PM to 5 PM, and “Ebro in the Morning” moving to an earlier 5 AM to 11 AM slot, with DJ Drewski filling the 11 AM to 1 PM window.

Industry Figures Rally in Support

The news of DJ Enuff’s exit immediately prompted widespread reactions from across the music industry, particularly from hip-hop’s top artists. Esteemed figures such as Fat Joe and DJ Khaled were seen at the Hot 97 station, expressing their shock and support for Enuff. Fat Joe, speaking with media outlets, described the news as “sad” and a loss for the culture, reflecting on Enuff’s extensive history with the station, dating back to its 98.7 KISS FM days.

“It’s actually sad,” Fat Joe commented. “I don’t know the politics of it, but the man has been on here since 98.7 KISS. He’s been on Hot 97 for 27 years.” The sentiment was echoed by DJ Khaled, who joined Fat Joe in showing solidarity.

Controversy Surrounds the Departure

Adding a layer of intrigue to the departure, DJ Enuff himself alluded to potential behind-the-scenes friction, specifically mentioning Funkmaster Flex in conversations with TMZ. While admitting he lacked definitive proof, Enuff expressed a deep-seated belief that Flex played a role in his termination. “I don’t think Flex is going anywhere. Flex is staying. He’s just going to a new shift,” Enuff stated, adding, “I don’t deserve that from him.”

Funkmaster Flex, upon hearing these comments, took to social media to address the allegations. He announced his intention to share his side of the story, teasing a detailed account for an upcoming broadcast, stating, “MONDAY! 7PM! I GOT A STORY TO TELL!” This public exchange has fueled speculation about the internal dynamics and potential rivalries within the station.

Impact on the Hip-Hop Music Scene

DJ Enuff’s departure is more than just a personnel change; it signifies a transitional moment for Hot 97 and, by extension, the broader hip-hop music landscape. For 27 years, he was a consistent presence, a curator of sounds, and a bridge between artists and listeners. His mixes, his interviews, and his role as a supporter of new talent have cemented his legacy as a vital contributor to hip-hop radio history. The station, long considered a premier destination for hip-hop culture, is now navigating a new chapter, and the absence of such a long-serving personality will undoubtedly be felt by its dedicated audience.

As Hot 97 continues to evolve with its new lineup, the enduring legacy of DJ Enuff remains a testament to his impact on the music industry. His journey from Brooklyn clubs to national radio waves, his work with hip-hop royalty, and his dedication to the craft have made him a memorable figure. The hip-hop world will be watching to see where this seasoned DJ takes his talents next.
